The 3rd Poppy Half Marathon took place in Bexhill on Remembrance Sunday 14th Nov. Hosted by Bexhill Runners this years event for the first time sold out reaching the limit of 600 entries.
In the last two years over £5000 has been raised in support of the Royal British Legion and the race organisers expect a considerable sum from this years event. Ernie Eldridge, president of the local Royal British Legion came along to present the winners cash prizes.
Once again weather was unkind with torrential rain, but despite this the runners still turned up for the start on West Parade at 12:30pm
The lapped Poppy course passed along West Parade, lower promenade, Richmond Road, Polegrove and Brockley Road. It all created for a great atmosphere with spectators, family and friends able to encourage the runners throughout the race.
There was a huge range of age and abilities from total beginners, through to experienced runners. Many Runners achieved great personal goals including one lady runner who raised over £15,000 for a Childrens Charity.
Nick Sasha of Torq Fitness led from start to finish setting a new course record in 1 hr 13 mins 37 secs, local Hastings AC athlete Joshua Varney 2nd and Robert Jeffery making the top 3. In the ladies race local Bexhill Runner Susie Casebourne completed her fantastic season with another win, completing the distance in 1:29:00 and finishing 20th overall. Sophie Grant and Ali Farrall made up the top 3 females.
The children’s races preceded the main event with the kids fortunately escaping the rain. Over 50 competed in either a 500m, 1km or 2km race. With the adult runners and spectators it created a great atmosphere for the kids, Winners were: 500m – Alexander Field 1 min 55 / 1km Greg Bennett 3 mins 55 / 2km – Oliver Platts 7 mins 56. What a future for running in Bexhill!
To list and thank everybody we would need a whole page, but a big thank you has to go to Stella from the Sovereign Café on West Parade for offering the surrounding area as race registration and keeping everyone well fed from dawn until dusk., www.tlsportsevents.co.uk for the chip timing and race equipment services, Active Rother and Rother Council for their continued support of the race, marshals and many many others. A huge thank to all the local residents for accommodating the race, especially from the flats on west parade who handed out hot drinks to the runners.
Full results can be viewed at www.poppyhalf.co.uk including links to race photos. http://gallery.sussexsportphotography.com/a.tlx?k=45fzga7

I just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone involved in organising the Poppy Half. I
t was only my 3rd half marathon but by far the best.
In fact, best race I've ever competed in.
Brilliantly organised, friendly marshals, fab atmosphere, despite the weather. And of course the cakes at the end were to die for...!
I love my medal too, a really lovely memento, much better than a lot of the cheap
nasty ones I've seen dished out!
So nice not to be bombarded with corporate sponsor tat at the finish, just a medal, water, a piece of fruit and cake - what's not to like!
Well done to everyone involved.
Thanks again for putting on such a fab
event and I'll hopefully see you next year!
